The 11 most common mistakes among my students

Many French learners sometimes make the same mistakes over and over. Identifying these errors makes progress easier and helps you speak more naturally.

Here are the 11 most common mistakes I encounter in my lessons.

1. Confusing "savoir" and "connaître"

❌ Je connais parler français. ✔ Je sais parler français.

• *Savoir* = skill / know-how
• *Connaître* = to be familiar with someone or something

2. Confusion between "depuis", "pendant" and "pour"

❌ J'habite à Paris pour cinq ans. ✔ J'habite à Paris depuis cinq ans.

• *Depuis* = ongoing action
• *Pendant* = completed duration
• *Pour* = future intention

3. False friends

❌ Actuellement, je suis très fatigué. (Actually = en réalité) ✔ En ce moment, je suis très fatigué.

4. Word order

❌ Je parle français bien très ✔ Je parle français très bien

5. Incorrect use of "ne … pas" with "bien"

❌ Je n'aime pas bien ce film. ✔ J'aime bien ce film ✔ Je n'aime pas trop ce film

6. Confusion "il y a" / "voilà" / "voici"

❌ Voici un problème que il y a. ✔ Voilà un problème.

7. Using "tu" / "vous"

❌ Tu pouvez m'aider ? ✔ Vous pouvez m'aider ?

8. Incorrect use of "depuis que"

❌ Depuis que je suis arrivé hier… ✔ Depuis que je suis arrivé…

9. Confusion between "à" and "en"

❌ Je vais à France. ✔ Je vais en France.

10. Wrong intonation in questions

❌ Tu viens? (monotone, unnatural) ✔ Tu viens? (rising intonation at the end)

11. Confusion "bon" / "bien"

❌ C'est bien gâteau ! ✔ C'est un bon gâteau !
